How to Wire a Home Security Surveillance System

Finding a security camera for CCTV surveillance of your home or property is the easy part. Now, you have to figure out how to wire the whole system together. If you don’t want to pay an arm and a leg for a contractor to simply plug in a few cables for you, here’s a quick guide on how to do it yourself.

The Cables
The kind of cables that you need for your system will largely depend on your setup and type of video camera, but in general, you’ll want what’s called a “siamese cable.” The name comes from the fact that they can run video and power at the same time. There are two main categories of siamese video cable: premade and coax. Premades work best with analog security cameras, and some types can carry audio as well as video and power. Coax siamese cables often run in bulk lengths with insulation to protect from noise over long distances. They pair well with high definition cameras.

The Connectors
Siamese cables require a BNC connector to attach the video component and a DC terminal for power, two for every cable you run (one on each end). Buying a bulk spool of cable and attaching your own connectors is a great way to save money, just as you might with bulk category 6 Ethernet cables or zipcord fiber optic cables.

The Maintenance
Like phone charger cables, any cable carrying power can pose a fire hazard if it becomes frayed or damaged. In 2008, electrical fires caused 53,600 home fires, 1,400 injuries, 500 deaths, and $1.4 billion in property damage. A security system is a great way to protect your home from thieves, but don’t let frayed siamese cables cause another kind of danger to your home!

Wiring cable for your home security system is simple, so long as you have the right equipment and a little bit of know-how. Do your research before you buy to make sure that you’re not only getting the best price, but getting the right tools to complete a quality job. After all, if home protection is what you’re after, it pays to be vigilant. See more.
